CBSO x Fierce Double Bill

SERAFINE1369 & Josh Anio Grigg, Dickie Beau & Helen Noir

In 2004, during Mark Ball’s tenure, Fierce Festival commissioned Luke Jerram’s Sky Orchestra. The public artwork was a collaboration with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and involved members of the orchestra flying low above the city in hot air balloons at dusk, playing music that would seed the city’s imaginations.

More than twenty years later, our two organisations are joining forces once again. We’ve commissioned some of our favourite live artists in the UK – SERAFINE1369 and Josh Anio Grigg, as well as Dickie Beau and Helen Noir – to seed new collaborations with members of the CBSO. This work-in-progress double bill, developed over an intentionally short period of time, is an indulgence in the possibilities of collaborations.

SERAFINE1369 is an artist, dancer and body-focused researcher working with dancing as a philosophical undertaking, a political project with ethical psycho-spiritual ramifications for being-in-the-world; dancing as intimate technology. They work with/in the context of the hostile architectures of the metropolis towards moments and states of transcendence.

 

SERAFINE1369’s approach acknowledges the cosmic oneness of all things as manifested through ecologies of relation and the fact that everything is made of the same stuff. They are intensely curious about the magic and mysteries of life-processes of distinction, variation, cycles, decomposition; the inevitability of movement.

 

Their work prioritises listening and is responsive to the specificities of context. Their practice is concerned with the integrity and efficacy of structures (bodily and social), collaboration, hosting and an interest in somatics, semiotics and symbiotics from a body-led, experiential position.

 

Josh Anio Grigg is a London-based sound designer, music producer and interdisciplinary collaborator whose practice spans theatre, dance and multimedia works. He creates immersive sound environments through digital processing of live or recorded audio, drawing on a background in DJing, dance music and experimental electronic arts.

 

His work treats sound as inseparable from the rhythm of performance. He is particularly interested in how production techniques across disciplines can inform and enhance one another, and regularly collaborates with artists on research and development, focusing on practical, robust approaches to realising ambitious ideas.

 

Josh holds a BA in Theatre and Performance from Roehampton University (2008).
