For more than five years, In the Mist has continued to travel through museums, cinematheques, and festivals worldwide, including Eye Filmmuseum (Amsterdam), BOZAR (Brussels), and Queer East Festival (London).

Set within a surreal gay sauna, the VR experience invites audiences into a space shaped by desire, memory, and intimacy. As they drift through its mist-filled rooms, the boundaries between gaze and being gazed upon, presence and absence, near and far gradually begin to shift.

Created during a time when physical contact became newly fragile, In the Mist reflects on spaces where strangers seek intimacy, connection, and recognition. It transforms the virtual sauna into a poetic meditation on loneliness, longing, and the vulnerability of being seen.

Recipient of the Panorama VR Prize at Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, In the Mist became the foundation for the award-winning multi-user VR experience Traversing the Mist, expanding its exploration of intimacy from an individual journey to a shared virtual experience.

Chou Tung-Yen is a Taiwanese director working across theatre, film, and immersive media. As the founder and Artistic Director of Very Theatre and Very Mainstream Studio, he creates interdisciplinary works exploring intimacy, memory and human connection. His internationally collaborative projects include Virtual Intimacy and Chronicle of Lightyear, as well as the VR works In the Mist and Traversing the Mist. His work has been presented at Venice Immersive, Cannes Immersive, IDFA DocLab, NewImages Festival, and Festival du Nouveau Cinéma. In the Mist received the Panorama VR Prize, while Traversing the Mist won the Grand Prize at NewImages Festival 2024.

VENUE INFO

The private reserved for this show is not wheelchair accessible. However it is possible to experience it on the ground floor which is wheelchair accessible, with a wheelchair accessible toilet. Bench seating will be available as well as a number of soft seating options. All activity will take place in one large room so noise levels will likely be consistent throughout the space; we will have ear defenders if needed. Toilets are all gender neutral.
